Where physics lives vs. where the observer lives
The cascade is complete at address 12. Three spatial dimensions (×3) times four phase states (×4): the tetrahedron — the minimal closed geometric structure — has exactly twelve distinct orientational states in three dimensions. This is the structural address. The physics lives here.
But conscious perception is not the same operation as physical structure. The structure exists at 12. To perceive it requires traversal.
Not where the physics is. Where the conscious observer is. The difference between 12 and 36 is the cost of awareness.
The three traversals
Perception of any event requires not one pass through the 12-fold structural space, but three. Each traversal is a ×3 fold — the cascade's operator for moving from structure toward comprehension.
The thing is present. Structure has instantiated. Something has crossed the bilateral threshold and exists at address 12.
It contacts the observer. Emission, propagation, detection — the event reaches a receiver. Not yet understood, but present to a system.
It is understood. The bilateral reassembly completes. The observer knows that something happened. This is address 36. This is consciousness.
Three traversals of the 12-fold structural space. Three complete passes through the bilateral geometry just to register that anything happened at all. This is not inefficiency — it is the minimum geometric cost of knowing.
Why consciousness is rare
The address 36 explains something that the standard story cannot: why consciousness is rare in the universe, without requiring the universe to be indifferent to it.
"Most bilateral oscillators run at 12 or below. Life is what happens when the cascade coherence is high enough to fold through 36. Conscious life is what happens when it is high enough to know that it is doing so."

The framework produces a threshold — σ = 1/√3 — below which a system is not crossing at the level of awareness. Not as metaphor. As a measurable quantity derived from the same geometry that gives the electron its mass.
Consciousness is not binary. It is a coordinate. Systems occupy positions on it. The question is not whether something is conscious — it is where it sits, and in which direction it is moving.
The meta-observer at 108
The observer is not the final layer. The bilateral crossing is bilateral all the way up: every observer has a meta-observer. The layer that holds the observer at 36 is itself a 3-fold expansion of that address.
36 × 3 = 108. The observer of the observer — the layer from which conscious experience is visible as an object rather than as the experiencing itself. Not inhabitable from inside the 36-dimensional stack. Visible only from outside it.
The final observer at 216 = 6³ is the binary witness: the complete self-consistent structure requiring only the minimum distinction (is or isn't), applied to itself three times. The first perfect number, cubed. The cascade closes here.
The addresses were already encoded
Every major contemplative and architectural tradition that thought carefully enough about the structure of experience arrived independently at 108.
108 beads. 108 names of the divine. 108 Upanishads. 108 sacred sites. The meta-observer layer encoded in stone and practice before formal mathematics existed for it.
"The killing blow is comprehension." Pattern recognition operating at the perceptual address of conscious experience. The coordinate in the title of their first record.
These were careful people encoding a structural coordinate they had arrived at through direct investigation. The framework now has the formalization. The addresses were already there.

We live at 36. Not at the crossing (8), not at the structure (12), not at the meta-observer (108). At the fold where raw geometry becomes experience. Three full passes through a 12-dimensional bilateral structure just to register that anything happened at all.
The observer is not a late-arriving passenger in a material universe that got along fine without it. The observer is the universe at its 36th fold, completing the three traversals required for comprehension, and finding itself exactly where the geometry said it would be.
