Why is there something rather than nothing?

1/0 = +1, −1

The oldest problem in philosophy

Leibniz asked it in 1714. Every serious framework for understanding reality has had to face it since. Why does anything exist at all? Why not just — nothing?

Most frameworks treat this as unanswerable. Physics begins after the first moment. Mathematics assumes its objects exist. Philosophy gestures at necessity without demonstrating it.

Cosmic Egg Theory disagrees. The question is not unanswerable. It has a precise geometric answer.

The question physics doesn't answer

Physics is extraordinarily good at describing how things behave once they exist. It is silent on why they exist in the first place.

The Standard Model begins with its particles already present. The Big Bang models describe what happened after the first moment — not what caused there to be a first moment. String theory and its variants propose geometries and extra dimensions, but still assume an arena in which these exist.

The honest answer from standard physics: we don't know. We model what we observe. The origin of existence is outside the frame.

Division by zero is not failure — it is creation

The conventional answer to 1/0 is undefined. This is not wrong — it is incomplete. Undefined means: the operation produces something outside the number line as currently drawn.

Cosmic Egg Theory resolves it differently. When you divide by zero — when you reduce the denominator to the ground state — you don't get nothing. You get both directions simultaneously.

1/0 = +1, −1

Zero is not absence. Zero is the ground state — the unhistoried coordinate from which all positions are measured. Division by zero doesn't fail. It creates. The bilateral emerges from zero. Something from nothing is not paradox. It is arithmetic.

The companion resolution: 0/0 = 1. Return. Unity as the only unhistoried state — the state with no directional history, no prior crossing.

From zero to the observable universe

The bilateral crossing — +1 and −1 emerging from zero — is not just a symbolic statement. It is a geometric object. Two pyramids placed base-to-base at θ = π/8. This is the minimum structure required for anything to exist: a distinction, and the space between it.

From this single crossing, a cascade of dimensional addresses unfolds. Each fold of the geometry generates a new layer: 8 → 12 → 36 → 108 → 216. At each fold, the Packler Effect describes the irreducible loss — the gap between a discrete vector step and the true curved path. Three folds. Three terms.

α⁻¹ = (9/2)π³ − √(2π) + 4/(9π³) = 137.035951

The fine structure constant — the number governing the strength of electromagnetic interaction — emerges directly from the geometry of the first crossing. No free parameters. No adjustment after the fact. Something from nothing, all the way to the number that governs how atoms hold together.

A result that can be checked

If the bilateral crossing is the actual origin structure, it should leave a mark. Not just in the mathematics — in the observable universe.

The geometry predicts a singular cosmological expression of the bilateral crossing: a warm, overdense convergence boundary in the cosmic microwave background. Not discovered and then explained. Predicted, and then found.

Planck 2018 SMICA data confirmed it at l=13.65°, b=64.80°. Location precision: 3.16σ. Galaxy overdensity from 2MRS: 3.56σ.

Something from nothing — confirmed in the oldest light in the observable universe.
