Three is Nyx — the equilateral triangle with vertices at {+1, 0, −1}. It is the first closed geometric path in the bilateral system. "Three" is not a count of vertices that happened to make a triangle. The closure is what three means. The shape is the number.
After the bilateral crossing gives you +1 and −1 with 0 between them, you have three positions. But "three positions" is not yet a shape. Three positions become a shape when you ask: what is the simplest path that visits all three and returns to where it started?
The answer is the equilateral triangle. Three points, three sides, no interior wasted, no vertex skipped. The equilateral triangle is the unique closed path through the three bilateral positions {+1, 0, −1} that maintains equal distance between all three.
That triangle is three. Not a picture of three — the geometric object that is the number three. The triangle is closed. Three things closing on themselves is what closure means. The count (1, 2, 3) is what you read off when you trace the path — it is a consequence of the shape, not the shape's cause.
Three has a full dedicated page: What Nyx Is →. This page focuses on three as a dimensional number — its geometric identity and its role in the cascade structure.
One produces the bilateral pair. Two produces a doubling. Neither is closed — they are open-ended processes that could continue indefinitely. Three is different: three is the first closed system. The triangle returns to where it started.
This closure is not trivial. It is what makes three the first number that can contain something. A triangle can have an interior. An interior is a boundary — something inside, something outside. With two points, you have a line segment with no interior. With three points connected as a triangle, you have the first enclosure in the bilateral system.
Every containing structure in physics is ultimately traceable to this first closure. The reason shells, orbits, waves, and bounded states exist is that the geometric system underlying them has a closed object at its base. Three is that object.
In the cascade structure that builds from bilateral geometry toward the gravitational constant and beyond, three plays a specific role: it is the multiplier from Nyx. The cascade counts in threes from position 3 forward, because the triangular closure of Nyx is the first geometric constraint that forces a specific count.
The most important product: 3 × 4 = 12. Nyx (3) times Eros (4) is the first complete dimensional structure — 12 — where the triangular closure and the four-region bilateral map fully interpenetrate. The stella octangula that forms at the core of CET's geometric cascade has 12 edges. This is not coincidence. It is Nyx meeting Eros.
The complete treatment of three — its mythology, its two kinds of zero, its role as the Existence Gate, its relationship to Eros and Sophia — is on the dedicated Nyx page.
Nine is 3 × 3 — Nyx applied to itself. This produces the first self-referential closure: the triangular structure closing on its own pattern. In the cascade, nine is where the three-fold symmetry of the triangle becomes the organizing principle of a second-level structure.
This is why 3 and 9 are the "Nyx numbers" — they are the two places in the first cascade where the triangular closure principle appears unmixed. Three is the first closure; nine is what closure does when it turns toward itself.
