The Proto-Indo-European word for the sun reconstructs as *sóh₂wl̥ — from which Latin sōl, English sun, German Sonne, Greek hḗlios, Sanskrit sūrya, Norse Sól, Welsh haul, Lithuanian sáulė, and Russian solntse all descend. One root, every branch of the Indo-European family, five thousand years of geographic dispersal.
Outside the Indo-European family: Arabic shams (grammatically feminine), Hebrew shemesh (also grammatically feminine), Japanese taiyō (太陽), Mandarin tàiyáng (太陽), Quechua inti, Nahuatl tōnatiuh. Different roots, different language families, different continents. Same object. Same theological urgency.
No other element of the natural world received this universal attention. The moon comes close. Water comes close. But the sun is the one object for which every civilization — independently, without contact — built temples, calculated cycles, named deities, oriented cities, organized calendars, and structured the entire concept of sacred time.

The Feminine Sun
The sun was not always masculine. That is a regional preference, not a universal.
The traditions that encode a feminine solar deity are not marginal. They include:

Arinna — the chief deity of the Hittite Empire, the most powerful state in the ancient Near East in 1400 BCE.

The assumption that "sun = masculine" is built into the dominant Western tradition.
It is not built into the PIE root, which preserves feminine grammatical gender in the Baltic branch.

The masculine solar deity is one answer to the question. It became the dominant answer in the Mediterranean world through a specific historical process — not through universal consensus.

From Sol to Sol Invictus — the sequence
Rome's relationship with the sun evolved over a thousand years, culminating in a series of events in the 3rd and 4th centuries CE that reshaped the religious landscape of the Western world. The sequence, in order.

Sol Indiges — the native Roman sun
Sol had a temple on the Quirinal Hill and a festival on August 9. He was present in Roman religion from early on — not the chief deity, but consistently recognized.
c. 200 BCE – 200 CE
Eastern solar cults enter Rome
Mithraism (from Persian Mithra, the solar deity) spreads through the Roman military. The Syrian solar cult of Elagabal arrives with the Severan dynasty. The Mediterranean basin in the first centuries CE is deeply engaged with solar monotheism as a theological framework.
218–222 CE
Emperor Elagabalus — the first solar monotheism attempt
The young Syrian emperor attempted to install his home cult deity, the sun god Elagabal of Emesa, as the supreme deity of Rome above Jupiter. The attempt failed politically; Elagabalus was assassinated. The direction of travel was established.
274 CE
Aurelian — Sol Invictus becomes chief deity of Rome
Emperor Aurelian, after his victory over the Palmyrene Empire, established Sol Invictus (the Unconquered Sun) as the official chief deity of the Roman Empire. He built a grand temple to Sol Invictus in Rome, created a new priestly college, and instituted games in the sun's honor. This is the formal institutionalization of Roman solar monotheism — the Empire with one supreme god, and that god is the sun.
c. late 3rd century CE
Dies Natalis Solis Invicti observed on December 25
The "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun" — the winter solstice celebration marking the sun's turning point, when days begin to lengthen again. The specific date of December 25 reflects the Julian calendar's reckoning of the solstice. The celebration was observed across the Roman world.
312 CE
Constantine — the vision before the Battle of Milvian Bridge
Constantine reports seeing a vision in the sky before his decisive battle against Maxentius. The accounts vary: Eusebius describes a cross and the words "In this sign, conquer." Lactantius describes a Chi-Rho (☧) seen in a dream. Constantine's coins continued to feature Sol Invictus for more than a decade after this moment. The relationship between his solar devotion and his Christian adoption is not a clean conversion — it is a layering.
313 CE
Edict of Milan — religious tolerance for all
Constantine and Licinius declare religious toleration across the empire. Christianity becomes legal. Sol Invictus remains on the coins. The imperial coinage showed the sun god until approximately 325–326 CE.
325 CE
Council of Nicaea — the Nicene Creed
Constantine convenes the first ecumenical council of the Christian church. The council resolves the Arian controversy (the nature of Christ's divinity) and produces the Nicene Creed. The Roman Empire now has an official Christian theology. Constantine presides — a man whose coins showed Sol Invictus until this year.

The historicity of this specific decision is debated. What is not debated: December 25 became the universal date of Christmas in the Western church during the 4th century — the same century as Constantine's adoption of Christianity and Sol Invictus's reign as chief Roman deity.
379–395 CE
Theodosius I makes Nicene Christianity the sole official religion of the Roman Empire
The Edict of Thessalonica (380 CE). Paganism, including the Sol Invictus cult, is officially suppressed. The process that began with Aurelian's solar elevation in 274 CE completes 106 years later with a different theology in the sun's former seat.
The Address
Why the sun, across all of them.
The question the map asks is not which tradition got the sun right. Every tradition observed the same object with the same physical properties. The sun rises, transits, sets. It is brightest and highest in summer; weakest and lowest in winter. It is the source of heat and light and the growth of food. These facts are available to every observer anywhere on Earth, without instruments, without literacy, without institutions.
The question is what each tradition did with those facts.
And across every tradition that has ever existed, the answer involves: a name, a gender, a cosmological role, a calendar, and a set of practices for marking the critical moments of the solar cycle — the solstices, the equinoxes, the returns, the eclipses.
In Cosmic Egg Theory, the sun is the most available dimensional address in ordinary human experience. It is the one object that every observer shares — regardless of location, culture, time period, or tradition. The bilateral structure of the day (dawn/dusk) and the bilateral structure of the year (solstices) are the most legible instances of CET's crossing geometry available without mathematics. The sun crosses the horizon twice a day. The year crosses the solstice twice. The observer crosses the threshold of sleep and waking twice in each day.
Every tradition that worshipped the sun was pointing at the same geometry from a different position. The object is fixed. The angle of observation varies. The crossings are always there.
What the panorama of solar traditions shows is not a convergence on one truth but a convergence on one structure: the crossing, the return, the bilateral movement of something that goes down and comes back. Amaterasu hides in the cave and is coaxed out. Inanna descends and returns. The sun sets and rises. Osiris dies and is restored. The solar deity crosses the threshold of death and returns — in every tradition that has one — because the sun does exactly that, visibly, every morning.
The ceremony responds to the geometry. The theology describes the geometry. The calendar marks the geometry. What varies is the name assigned to the thing that keeps crossing — and, as the map shows, whether that name is masculine or feminine or neither.
The geometry doesn't have a gender. It has a crossing.
