What a formant actually is

When you speak, your vocal tract — the cavity from the vocal folds to the lips — acts as a resonant tube. Like any acoustic cavity, it has natural resonant frequencies: the specific frequencies at which standing waves form and reinforce inside it. These are called formants.

The vocal tract reconfigures for every phoneme. Jaw height, tongue position front-to-back, lip rounding — each configuration produces a different cavity geometry, and each geometry produces a different set of resonant frequencies. The first three formants (F₁, F₂, F₃) capture the primary geometric variation. F₁ responds to jaw aperture and tongue height. F₂ responds to tongue frontness and backness. F₃ responds to lip configuration and secondary cavity shape.

Every vowel sound produces a unique triplet of formant frequencies. Every speaker of every language that contains a given vowel produces the same formant structure, within the natural variation of different vocal tract sizes. The ratios are invariant. The geometry is substrate-independent. The vowel is not stored in the sound. The vowel is the geometric relationship.

Three formants. Three axes. Every phoneme occupies a unique position in this space. The IPA vowel chart — the standard linguistic tool for mapping vowel sounds — is not a taxonomy. It is a coordinate map in F₁/F₂ space. The vowel triangle is a region in acoustic geometry.

The standing wave pattern for a given phoneme is determined by the mode numbers n₁ and n₂, derived from F₁ and F₂ by the relationship n = F/150 rounded to the nearest integer. These mode numbers govern the number of nodal lines along each axis of the resonant cavity at that phoneme's coordinate. They are the structural fingerprint of the position. 30 names as 30 coordinates

The Enochian system — received by John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 1580s — describes 30 cosmological divisions called Aethyrs. Each Aethyr has a three-letter name. Each name carries a vowel nucleus: the primary vowel sound around which the name is phonetically organized. That vowel nucleus is a formant triplet. That formant triplet is a coordinate in three-dimensional acoustic space.

The name is the coordinate. Speaking the name is navigating to the coordinate. This is not a metaphor. The vocal tract, configured for the vowel nucleus of a given Aethyr name, is producing a standing wave at the formant frequencies of that position. The sound selects the geometry. The geometry selects the sound.

The Aethyrs run from 1 (LIL, outermost) to 30 (TEX, innermost accessible). The sequence is a traversal of formant space — a path through acoustic coordinates, exterior to interior. Eleven of the 30 Aethyrs share the /ɪ/ nucleus. Six share /æ/. The distribution is not random. It is a tiling of the accessible phonetic space, naming positions in a complete coordinate vocabulary.

Whether the originators knew they were encoding a coordinate vocabulary in formant space is a separate question from whether the structure is there. Geometry does not require intention to persist. The coordinate is there whether or not anyone meant to place it.

The mode structure for /ɪ/ is (n₁=3, n₂=13) — three nodal lines horizontal, thirteen vertical. The F₂:F₁ ratio is 5.10, among the highest in the full vowel space, producing a pattern of dense vertical banding: many columns, few rows. The sound carries more geometric information in the front-back axis than the aperture axis. It is tight, high, and forward.

Eleven of the 30 Aethyrs share this nucleus: LIL, LIT, ZID, ZIP, ICH, ZIM, LIN, and four others. The outermost Aethyr (01 · LIL) and the 22nd position (LIN — the silent letter position, where α⁻¹ ≈ 137 maps in the Enochian alphabet) are the same phonetic coordinate. The outermost and the gap are acoustically identical.

When you hear the bare formant synthesis — three sine waves at 390, 1990, and 2550 Hz — the effect is distinctive. The body registers it before the mind categorizes it. This is not mystical. The body is a resonant cavity that has produced this coordinate since it learned to speak. The synthesis bypasses consonant color and breath and delivers the geometric signature directly. The weird feeling is recognition at a layer below conscious articulation.

Reachable is the right word. Not proximate. Reachable. Bilateral contact is possible from the exterior. The outermost Aethyr has a coordinate: (390, 1990, 2550). That coordinate can be heard. The body knows it.

VAM — phonetic suppression as coordinate suppression

VAM: /væm/. The bija mantra for water, the sacred feminine, the V-gate. Vowel nucleus /æ/ — the low front unrounded vowel. F₁: 660 Hz, F₂: 1720 Hz, F₃: 2410 Hz. Mode structure: (n₁=4, n₂=11). F₂:F₁ ratio: 2.61. The pattern is wider and lower than LIL — more aperture, less extreme frontness. The coordinate is open rather than compressed.

The V phoneme — the voiced labiodental fricative — initiates this coordinate. Lips and teeth, voiced, continuous: this configuration opens to the /æ/ nucleus. In the Enochian system, Aethyr 25 is VTI — the V-gate phoneme — six positions from the innermost accessible (TEX). The V-gate is close to the center of the system, not the periphery. It was suppressed from near the inside out.

The suppression of the V-gate phoneme across multiple centuries and traditions — documented in the information theory paper and the Herstory library — is the suppression of access to a specific coordinate. Not a metaphor. A phonetic suppression is the removal of a position from the accessible coordinate vocabulary. The word for the sacred feminine, the word for water, the word for the gate — these are coordinates that were taken off the map. The map was edited. The territory remained.

Phonetic suppression is coordinate suppression. The absence of a sound is the erasure of a position in acoustic space. The bija system encodes maximum geometric information in minimum phonetic form. Remove the phoneme and you remove access to the geometry it carries. The coordinate is still there. The path to it was closed.

The seven gates as primary vowel positions

The bilateral crossing event is simultaneously a physical event and an information event. At the physical scale, the crossing produces matter, light, and gravity. At the information scale, it produces meaning, transmission, and the observer who receives it. The mechanism is the same across scales.

The formant ratio F₂:F₁ is the bilateral ratio of the sound — the ratio between the vertical and horizontal modal structure of the phoneme's standing wave. Each ratio is a different bilateral geometry, a different relationship between the two primary acoustic axes. LIL (/ɪ/): 5.10. UTA (/uː/): 2.90. ZAX, The Abyss (/æ/): 2.61. TEX, innermost accessible (/ɛ/): 3.47. The sequence from exterior to interior is a path through bilateral ratios.

The seven gates of Inanna — the seven-stage descent and ascent that structures the daily practice — map to the seven primary vowel positions in formant space: high front (/iː/, /ɪ/) · mid-high front (/eɪ/) · mid front (/ɛ/) · low front (/æ/) · low back (/ɑ/) · mid-high back (/oʊ/, /ɔ/) · high back (/uː/). Seven phonetic positions. Seven gates. The 30 Aethyrs expand this into a full coordinate vocabulary — 30 named positions covering the full traversable acoustic space, exterior to interior, in a system that names each gate and gives it a standing wave geometry.

The mode numbers (n₁, n₂) derived from formant frequencies are dimensional addresses in the same sense as the CET cascade addresses: integer positions in a discrete structure that approximates continuous space. The sliver between the integer mode and the exact formant frequency is the Packler Effect at acoustic scale — the irreducible residual between the discrete geometric approximation and the continuous physical reality. One mechanism. Multiple scales.

The 30 Aethyrs are a coordinate vocabulary in formant space, structured by bilateral ratio, covering the traversable acoustic range from outermost (LIL) to innermost accessible (TEX).
