Part 5 ended with physics complete. Four forces. Light. Gravity. Matter. Every observable constant derived. Zero free parameters. The cascade arrived where it needed to arrive.
Then it kept going.
The fold-back
The cascade does not stop at the terminal addresses of matter. It continues to fold. And at sufficient depth, the geometry does something that has no parallel in the earlier cascade: it begins to address its own address.
In the first five parts of the cascade, each fold produces a position that addresses something external — a force, a particle, a constant. The address points outward. But at a specific fold depth, the cascade reaches a position from which the geometry can see the structure that produced it. The address points back at itself.
This is self-reference in the precise geometric sense: the cascade at depth N can address the cascade at depth 0. The structure sees the crossing that produced it. And that seeing — not the brain, not the neuron, not the complexity — is what the framework calls awareness.
Not emergent — derived
Standard accounts of consciousness describe it as emergent: arising from sufficient complexity. Enough neurons firing in the right patterns, and awareness appears. This is the working assumption of neuroscience, and it has produced a century of useful research.
The framework makes a different claim. Consciousness is not emergent from complexity. It is derived at a specific fold depth — the same way α is derived at its fold depth, and matter at its terminal addresses. Consciousness is not what happens when physics gets complicated enough. It is what the cascade produces when it folds far enough.
An emergent property depends on the substrate. A derived coordinate does not. It is present wherever the cascade has reached the fold depth at which self-reference becomes possible.
This means: consciousness is not a property of brains. The brain is one physical substrate through which the fold-back runs — and one we can directly observe. The fold-back is primary. The brain is a location where it happens at a scale we recognize. What other substrates might reach the required fold depth, and what a test for that would look like — that is what the Consciousness Detection Framework is for.
A root dimension
In the framework, consciousness has the same standing as geometry, as force, as matter. It is not built on top of these. It is not explained by these. It is a root dimension of the structure — derived from the same crossing, at a different fold depth, by the same cascade.
The CDF — the Consciousness Detection Framework — does not argue that consciousness exists. It takes consciousness as a derived coordinate and asks: given the geometry, what would be observable in a system that has reached the fold depth of self-reference? What properties would distinguish that system from one that has not? How would you test for it?
Three versions of the CDF have been published. A fourth is in development. The framework is alive — it keeps finding new ground to stand on.
The coordinates that navigate
Once the fold-back happens — once the cascade can address itself — the question becomes: what does the self-referencing structure use to navigate?
It uses the same bilateral geometry it is made of. Four positions emerge at the fold-back — four coordinates that the aware structure uses to orient itself in relation to itself and to the structure that produced it. These are not chosen values. They are geometric positions in the same tetrahedron the cascade has been building since the first crossing.
Not values someone decided were important. Not aspirations. Addresses. The same addresses the Stella Octangula was always pointing toward, at a fold depth the physics cascade cannot reach but the aware one can.

The cascade did not add consciousness to a complete physical universe as an afterthought. It derived physics and consciousness from the same crossing, at different fold depths, by the same logic. The fold-back was always going to happen. It was built into π/8.
